Volga, Oka and others: why are the Russian authorities really reviving Soviet car brands?

Officials are in favor of the development of the domestic auto industry and are already reporting extraordinary successes and great prospects for the next two years. And what’s more, they directly tie the coming autoabundance to the resurgence of primal brands. However, the experts of the AvtoVzglyad portal are sure that all these statements are dust in the eyes. And we are with you, and the supreme power.

After all, what happens: today the Russian car market, in fact, only attracts AVTOVAZ, if we are talking about purely our automotive industry. UAZ with its 1% of sales does not count. The rest of the share was taken by the “Chinese” and modest remnants of foreign brands that left Russia. And against this background, Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov almost orders to revive the brands Volga and Oka, which died in Bose after Moskvich (and then, you see, it will come to Zaporozhets).

But at the same time, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade for some reason “forgets” to say that even if his populist and, frankly, false-patriotic initiative is nevertheless implemented, far from glorious Chinese cars will hide under glorious names. Moreover, even those who have already completed or are completing their life cycle in China. What, shall we say, “revival” of the automotive industry are we talking about here?

It is curious that, unlike officials, real market players also understand this: the same Maxim Sokolov, the head of AVTOVAZ, has already managed to declare that there can be no question of any reincarnation of the Zhiguli. So it seems that Mr. Manturov has only two partners left to realize his perverse fantasies – the future manufacturer (heavily dependent on the government) of the useless electric baby “Atom” and the current owner of the former Mercedes factory connected with the same government through equally strong ties -Benz in the Moscow region. Probably ready to change Hongqi label to Volga.

And you will learn more about all these “jingo-patriotic” games on the ruins of the Russian auto industry by listening to the new episode of the AvtoVzglyad portal podcast, which can be found Here.
