Series production of the “import-substituted” ESC system has started in Kostroma

Last summer, the Kostroma company Itelma launched the production of the ABS system, and now, at the end of the year, ESC. The first model to receive Russian units will be the LADA Vesta, and this will happen in early 2024.

Why did the ESC system only go into mass production six months after ABS? Representatives of Itelma explain this by the peculiarities of the adjustment of the blocs: in the case of the exchange rate stability system, the development/implementation process requires “significantly more time and competencies.”

The ESC system is produced in Kostroma under a license that includes all necessary documentation and software. In addition, it allows you to increase the degree of localization of components. Therefore, the plant’s plans for next year include the launch of mechanical processing of hydraulic unit parts and electronic modules, as well as the use of household fasteners and insulation. The intention is to fully localize ESC in Kostroma by 2026.

As already mentioned, the first domestic ESC will be received by LADA Vesta, but Itelma will not limit itself to AVTOVAZ alone. The company is also negotiating with other car manufacturers, in particular Moskvich, Geely and GAZ. According to the plan, 550,000 ABS and ESC blocks will be produced in Kostroma by 2024. Overall, the company plans to increase production volumes to 750,000 units per year, but depending on increased demand, it is prepared to produce 1.2 million units.
