The number of car thefts in Russia has fallen sharply

The number of car thefts in Russia in 2023 has decreased sharply. Experts explain the positive trend mainly by the geopolitical situation: traditional sales markets such as Ukraine and the Baltic states have been virtually blocked since the spring of 2022.

As Kommersant reports, citing data from the Ministry of the Interior, 6,580 car thefts were registered in January-November 2023 – 22.9% less than in the same period in 2022. Over the 11 months of 2023, 11,600 thefts were also registered – and this is 8.4% less than a year earlier. The largest number of such crimes was committed in the Moscow, Leningrad, Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk, Novosibirsk, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk and Primorsky regions.

The All-Russian Union of Insurers (VUS) confirms the trend towards a decrease in the number of thefts, but in addition to the global situation, they note an increase in the number of surveillance cameras. For example, in 2022 the Ministry of the Interior launched the “web” system, which allows you to track wanted cars in real time as they move within and between regions.

According to the VSS, the cars most stolen in 2023 were domestic brands (especially LADA), but also Hyundai and Kia. The most popular models among the attackers were Hyundai Santa Fe, LADA Granta, Kia Rio, Toyota Camry, Mitsubishi Outlander, Toyota RAV4, Kia Sorento, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Solaris and VAZ-2121 Niva.
