Who and why really needed the E-Neva electric car project
After the collapse of the Russian auto industry, projects for the production of electric vehicles suddenly began to mushroom all over the country. The AvtoVzglyad portal found out why the topic of releasing another electrical prodigy, presented under the name E-Neva, was recently revived.

In itself, the production of electric vehicles does not seem to contain any tricks. There is such a stream of environmentally conscious progressives who jokingly try to destroy internal combustion engines – and okay. But here’s what’s strange: as soon as the conversation about this becomes related to our country, it immediately starts to smell strongly of some kind of scam.

Electric cars are not about the economy

Apparently, historical memory works, which cannot remember a single completed domestic electric car project. Starting with the unforgettable Mikhail Prokhorov’s Yo-mobile, any attempt to build something that runs on alternative energy turned into either a circus tent or a smoke screen hiding the serious interests of serious people – nothing to do with the car industry.

In the current situation, a third has been added to these two drivers: the urgent need to disguise the incompetence and inability to organize the work of the automotive industry in a critical situation. The tactic is almost win-win – in the absence of the necessary skills and technologies, you have to strive for some miraculous miracle. As the hero of the famous cartoon said: “Oh, I could do it alone! She would open her whole mouth! However, knowing is not absolutely necessary. The main thing is to run around with a grandiose idea for as long as possible, present it at the highest level and wait for it to jump off the subject calmly and without prejudice.

Strange project of the defense group

Last week, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia and part-time head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov expressed the hope that literally in the coming months there will be partners for the groundbreaking project of the electric crossover E-Neva . Everything would be fine, but a strange epic is going on with this Neva. It all started in 2016, when the president ordered the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex to increase the share of civilian and dual-use products. Then, in peacetime, the Almaz-Antey concern took it under the hood and began developing an electric car in 2019.

Then the strangeness begins. The Obukhov Plant, which specializes in the manufacture of command posts for the Strategic Missile Forces, was announced as the prime contractor. The question is, which side does he relate to the auto industry? The answer is none. Involuntarily I think not only of the notorious Yo-mobile, but also of the rather successful Dyson company, which quietly and peacefully produced vacuum cleaners and other household nonsense. Suddenly she was impatient to produce an electric car of her own design. Naturally, the project wasted a lot of money and ended with a loud puff.

Almaz-Antey runs the risk of finding himself in a similar situation. In 2021, the group presented a live sample of its work. Another year passed, and only then it became clear that the startup, which had somehow existed for several years, did not acquire investors and was carried out exclusively at the expense of the concern – that is, at the expense of the government. In addition, the location where the assembly of the brainchild of the defense plant will be organized has not been determined.

Dust in your eyes

Suppose Denis Manturov, who received a strong scolding from the president at the beginning of this year, will find entrepreneurs interested in the release of E-Neva in the months he indicated. And AVTOVAZ will share the production space, having expressed its willingness to give the former Nissan plant for these purposes. And let’s imagine that in some unknown way there is the electronics necessary for the production of modern cars. But one more question remains – and who needs it, this “Neva”? Who will be the buyer when people are now and traditional cars are not very affordable?

And in general, in light of the ongoing special operation, it would make more sense for the Almaz-Antey concern to continue its direct business and not dust the eyes of the country’s leaders and the population to sprinkle with projects that, by definition, will in no way lift the domestic auto industry out of the crisis.
