Why Russian authorities insist on continuing production of deadly cars
The news is as bad as expected. The government is going to expand the simplified rules for certification of cars produced in Russia. Why road safety fades into the background, the AvtoVzglyad portal figured out.

According to the agency RIA Novosti, the government seems to be expanding the simplified rules for the certification of domestic cars. What does this mean for ordinary motorists and pedestrians? Only one thing: we will continue to be forced to buy cars that are dangerous not only for the owners themselves, but for everyone around them.

As the AvtoVzglyad portal has already reminded, in the spring of 2022 a decree was issued according to which car manufacturers were allowed to abandon a number of systems on new cars. Among them are ABS, ESP, airbags, ERA-GLONASS emergency assistance functionality in case of accidents. Even something terrible was allowed according to environmental radicals: the production of engines with the lowest emission standards, up to Euro-0.

embarrassing regulations

In March last year, this was justified – foreigners disappeared from the Russian market as if by magic, taking with them all the technological secrets that could not be replaced overnight. Another thing is that none of those in power had a simple question: how did this happen after a decade of close cooperation with global concerns and localization that has grown by leaps and bounds? By the way, for some reason this question does not occur to them now.

But what made the government extend such embarrassing exceptions after 10 months? Yes, the problem has not gone away! In addition, there are tendencies to aggravate it. For example, AVTOVAZ began to assemble a version of the LADA Granta sedan without electric power and central locking.

As Ostap Kise said: “Listen, drunkard, what clever people write in the newspapers! Listen! Viktor Pushkarev, an analyst at the Avtostat agency, quite understandably explains: “In order to ensure technological sovereignty, it is imperative to locate the production of all the main auto parts on the territory of the Russian Federation. And this means that if you are going to launch a full-fledged sovereign production of a specific Chinese car model, you need to create a full-fledged pool of enterprises that supply the car parts.

A natural question arises, how will this be created: by completely copying all technologies and equipment by Russian specialists or by purchasing all this ready-made from Chinese companies? So far, no comments on this question have been heard from the organizers of the sinification process of our automotive industry. In addition, such a project requires colossal investments, which can only be provided by the state. And I am extremely skeptical about the possibilities of investment by Chinese carmakers in Russian production.”

The spoken word is the truth

Here it is, the spoken word, which is the truth! Without targeted public investment – gigantic! – in the development of automotive electronics, the industry will remain at the level of a banana republic. I will not specify, so as not to offend African friends. In the words of my high school teacher, this is even a good idea, not just President Reagan.

However, public money stubbornly tumbles everywhere, but not in the reconstruction of technologies for the production of complex auto parts. Funds are regularly allocated for sales promotion programs, despite the fact that it is not clear what the Department of Industry and Commerce is so concerned about selling. Is it really those very underpowered cars that aren’t enough for everyone anyway?

Train madness

And what about the general electric car frenzy that has swept Russia? They account for a pitiful share of the country – less than half a percent of total passenger car sales in 2022. But if you look at the news feed for one day, it’s full of reports: “The first Skywell ET5 electric car was sold in Russia”, “Atom electric car prototype will be presented in April-May”, “Start sales of Dreamer electric minivan in Russia”, “Electrocrossover Voyah Free has found its first buyers in Russia.” I won’t even list a hell of a lot of electric start-ups that are started up in the vastness of a grateful homeland and that also require a lot of money.

So maybe it’s worth finally getting started? For example, to redirect the full power of the intellect of the engineers of the Almaz-Antey arms concern from the production of the electric car E-Neva that no one needs to the development of household car electronics?
