Last Monday in January, representatives of Avtotor and Kaiyi Auto signed two agreements at once: on the launch of the “industrial” production of the E5 sedan and on the terms and direction of further cooperation. From the latter it follows that the Kaliningrad plant has become not only an assembly site, but also a distributor of the brand in Russia and some CIS countries. Which is generally odd, considering that “Kai” (correct pronunciation) is a sub-brand of Chery. Oh yeah.

So the Kaiyi E5 sedan. More than 400 people are involved in the production line, parts are supplied from China. The acceptance of applications from potential dealers has begun: the first retailers will probably be determined in the very near future, as sales should start as early as the end of March. There is no technical information about the novelty aimed at Russia yet – of course, this will be revealed later.

In general, the Kaiyi E5 is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with 156 hp. with., “mechanics” with five gears or a variator. The dimensions of the Chinese sedan are 4666/1825/1483 mm, the wheelbase is 2700 mm. In terms of distance between the axles, the novelty is close to, for example, Toyota Corolla – that is, it will play in the empty C-segment, where only Skoda Octavia, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Cerato and Ceed remain. Well, the same Corolla, which can still be found at the dealers.

As for the brand’s future plans, Kaiyi will launch three more models by the end of the year. Obviously, among them there will be two versions of the X3 crossover (normal and Pro). Perhaps some kind of hybrid or electric car will also come on the market – now it’s fashionable.
