Sedans start and lose, or who in Russia is tired of crossovers
On the ruins of the car market, very unexpected ideas sometimes arise. Recently, various people, citing various arguments, have proved that the time of crossovers and SUVs is coming to an end. That we can expect a strong resurgence of interest in sedans in our country in the near future. Is this really so, understood the AvtoVzglyad portal.

First of all, it is worth paying attention to the obvious: no ash from new sedans will fall on the Russian buyer in the short and medium term due to their absence in the required quantities. However, the same goes for crossovers. But some facts, indicating the imminent recapture of low-slung cars, appear from time to time. The question is to what extent they reflect future trends.

Naive hopes of sedan lovers

Here’s Chery, one of the most active companies in our market, with an emphasis on SUVs from the very beginning, received a Vehicle Type Approval (OTTS) certificate for the Chery Arrizo 5 Plus, Chery Arrizo 6 and Omoda S5 sedans. The latest model – a compact four-door – is positioned as a replacement for the departed Kia Cerato, Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla.

Furthermore, sales started withedana Geely foreword — a car of a higher class, from the companyHyundai Sonata or Kia K5. And at the Belarusian plant “Belgi”, not the last supplier of cars to the Russian market, assembly of Geely Emgrand 7 New will begin this year. Another Chinese brand, Changan, received an OTTS for the Uni-V liftback in the last days of 2022.

The second hope of naive Russian drivers is Iran. Persian companies in life specialize in sedans, so there is nothing to be surprised at all. It hardly makes sense to speculate that they will not bring crossovers to Russia – all talk about such deliveries still remains at the level of unverified rumors.

The statistics are disappointing

Can conclusions be drawn from the above? Doubtless. For example, how do you like this: almost all world brands have in their assortment, in addition to fashionable crossovers, sedans, which they also have to sell in one way or another. I do not like? Little optimism? What to do, how much to eat – so much to eat. No one knows and cannot even imagine how many of these announced models will be in demand in the Russian market. Perhaps the matter will be limited to the delivery of a few dozen cars a month, and all the steam, as they say, will blow its whistle.

Moreover, the statistics do not confirm any shift in consumer interests in favor of sedans. According to the Avtostat agency, 347,200 new crossovers and SUVs were purchased in Russia by the end of 2022, accounting for 55.4% of the total market. And in January of the current year, the share of SUVs rose to 63%. Here is such a non-standard counteroffensive, leading to the loss of initial positions.

Swimming in muddy water

Another interesting plunge into the dark topic of the return of sedans to the leading position was made by Vincent Kobe, CEO of Citroën, as the AvtoVzglyad portal has already written. True, the top manager of the French company did not comment on current trends, but predicted a very controversial future. Mr Kobe said that due to the rapid growth of electric vehicle production, crossovers will be on the verge of extinction.

That in the petrol world the energy loss from the high, angular body with crappy aerodynamics can be compensated by simply increasing the volume of the fuel tank. In an electric car, the penalty for aerodynamic inefficiency is an order of magnitude higher – you will have to install extra heavy batteries. Therefore, says the head of Citroën, cars (all of which will be electric vehicles per wheel) will soon be compact, squat, streamlined and light – that is, sedans.

I don’t want to disappoint “dear Vincent”, but I have to, because all his prophecies are based on a very shaky foundation. Why does he think that because of the false aspirations of Western governments, which impose their electroreligion by fire and sword, people will eventually give up the dream of individual mobility, convenience, and any opportunity for family vacations?

Greta Tumberg – to school

Well, even if they are forced to make such sacrifices. But the triumph of electric cars, if it happens at all, will come only with the invention of completely new technologies for battery production – light, environmentally friendly, with a large capacity. But then the sacrifices to aerodynamics won’t be so bloody.

However, if you look as far into the future as Vincent Kobe tries, all tantrums with eco-friendly transportation, the carbon footprint and global warming threaten to fade into oblivion by then. The world is changing before our very eyes and hypocrisy, in any form, is becoming an increasingly expensive pleasure for the most developed economies.

So it’s time to send the Greta Tumberg collective, truant and drop-out, back to school. And we all calm down – the global invasion of sedans, as well as global warming, is not yet expected.
