Sanctions against Russia: which car brands have spoiled us the most
Formally, everything is clear: foreign car manufacturers, with the exception of Chinese and Iranian ones, have left Russia. But the informal picture is less clear. Many companies timidly try to sabotage the restrictions imposed on their business, to at least partially circumvent them. And who and how much succumbed to the sanctions policy that the United States imposed on the world, the AvtoVzglyad portal found out.

“For each of you I did a good deed in time and now I am being punished for it. Such is the law of our sorrowful world: every good deed brings retribution to the offender,’ the chief fortune teller on Severed Heads Bridge told his fellow craftsmen. And in some ways the disappointed old man was right.

First about the renegades

Which car manufacturers did our authorities love, care for and cherish the most? The answer is quite obvious – Renault, of course. The French company was no longer seen as foreign – it was all its own, dear. This in no way prevented the management of the concern from deciding before everyone else to escape from Russia – after the very first menacing cry from across the ocean. The French left the shops and hardware here and took all the software and all the technological secrets with them. They left a huge army of renovators without warranty and service, cut off the supply of spare parts to Russia and put all the problems on the shoulders of AVTOVAZ. Here it is, French gratitude.

The second concern, also bathed in the boundless favor of the authorities, was Volkswagen. Somehow it is not surprising that these beauties did the same as Renault – production is closed forever, service is suspended indefinitely, there are no spare parts and there will be none. In some ways, the Germans even surpassed the French. Already on their own initiative, they launched a global hunt for companies engaged in the “gray” export of their products.

Of course, Skoda also faded from Russia. Instead of a lost market, it is trying to break into Vietnam, where car sales are twice as low as Russia in the terrible year 2022, while the economy feels good. God bless you fellow Czechs!

The third company that fell in the company of (pardon the pun) unreliable partners was Mercedes-Benz. The brand left and left the factory (although it generally had no right). Production, authorized service, original spare parts and diagnostics are completely curtailed.

And now – about the cunning

Well, with these guys everything is clear. But what others think of themselves remains a mystery. For example, the eternal competitor of Mercedes-Benz – BMW, although it stopped production at Avtotor, retained warranty service and spare parts supply. All cars produced for the Russian market still have a factory warranty. Similar story with Mazda.

Toyota is clearly on to something. It was reported late last year that the company had established direct supplies of genuine parts and also allowed dealers to import sanctioned parts through parallel imports. A few months later, an official denial came: the supply of components to Russia was not resumed, this is not true. But what actually happens there is unknown. The Japanese are somehow not eager to show off their activities in front of their American friends.

Also in the ‘fog of war’ is the activity of the Korean brands Kia and Hyundai. Production seems to be at a standstill, but the factory in St. Petersburg works in a strange way. Car maintenance was not interrupted: according to our source, whole trains with spare parts regularly arrive in Russia. Interestingly, there are no “attacks” on these companies by the authorities, as was the case with Toyota, for example.

In general, Koreans behave quite independently in all respects. For example, they refused to supply weapons to Ukraine, as South Korean Prime Minister Han Dok-soo officially announced. The automotive group is therefore clearly trying to get through the rain and not to close Russia to itself. Whether the Americans will be able to break the willfulness of their Asian ally remains to be seen in the near future.
