Solar power looks set to dominate fossil fuels by decade’s end

Solar energy is likely to become a leader in global electricity markets by the end of this decade. The study shows that this trend will likely continue even without more pro-solar policies.

Research results

Conducted using an integrated model, the study used data from around the world to forecast the popularity of energy sources by 2060, covering 22 energy types, including nuclear power and natural gas.

The results show that in 72 percent of simulated scenarios, solar energy is expected to dominate as the primary source, accounting for more than 50 percent of production.

Femke Nysse, lead author of the study and lecturer at the University of Exeter, said in an interview with Bloomberg:

We currently have a system dominated by fossil fuels, and without additional policies we will end up in a situation dominated by solar energy.

gloomy forecast

Although the outlook for solar energy is promising, there are some uncertainties and challenges to overcome in the transition to a solar-focused energy environment.

  • One of the main problems The permanent nature of solar energy Due to fluctuations in weather conditions. To alleviate this problem, researchers recommend integrating other renewable energy sources, improving energy storage capabilities in batteries, and improving existing electrical infrastructure.
  • Other obstacles to wider implementation of solar energy include: availability of finance solar energy projects in developing countries, the potential political consequences of layoffs in the fossil fuel sector and related industries, and difficulties in supplying necessary raw materials.

Despite these challenges, solar energy has a promising future as a cost-effective energy source with far fewer disadvantages compared to fossil fuels. As the world grapples with the effects of global warming, the transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources is becoming increasingly important.
